# Watersdeep: Dragon Heist

In Waterdeep, five male adventurers—Eyeless Shadowstep (Aasimar Paladin), Artemis (Human Rogue), Dren (Dwarf Fighter), Slim Jim (Human Rogue/Artificer), and Silas "Silver Tongue" Rushtyn (Yuan-ti Sorcerer)—embark on a treasure hunt for 500,000 Dragon coins, blending Waterdeep: Dragon Heist with custom psionic threats. In Session 1, they rescued Floon Blagmaar from a dungeon guarded by a Mind Flayer and Intellect Devourer, restored Dren’s mind with a Wish spell, and acquired Trollskull Manor, planning to convert it into a tavern. Eyeless favors the Lords’ Alliance, while the party, holding +1 GreyHand Renown, debates factions like Zhentarim and Xanathar. With shops like Bent Nail and newspapers like Daily Trumpet as resources, they navigate Waterdeep’s dangers to claim the hidden fortune.

<details id="bkmrk-%F0%9F%A7%AD-campaign-summary-s"><summary>🧭 Campaign Summary So Far (short)</summary>

The party established themselves in Waterdeep and took possession of Trollskull Manor, pushing toward becoming a real presence in Trollskull Alley. Early runs brought them into contact with the City Watch, local power players, and faction recruiters—while their tavern plans continued in the background.

A fireball explosion outside Trollskull Manor changed the tempo: civilians died (including the gnome Dalakhar), a Necklace of Fireballs was recovered, and the party gained a Nimblewright Detector from the Temple of Gond—tying the investigation to a rogue nimblewright and the Stone of Golorr.

The chase escalated into noble and faction violence (Gralhund Villa), arrests and payoffs, a missing Stone, duergar interference, Harper entanglements, and finally a brutal South Ward night where the party recovered the Stone again—along with new Vault of Dragons intelligence and a fresh list of “keys” needed to reach it.

##### "Ballad of the Trollskull Heros"

##### by [Varrick Songweave](https://bookstack.thecartwrights.nz/books/varrick-songweave)

```yaml
(Verse 1)
In Waterdeep’s alleys, where shadows hold sway,
Five heroes united to challenge the fray.
Eyeless’s blade shone with justice’s light,
Artemis struck swift, a ghost in the night.
(Verse 2)
Dren’s hammer crashed bold, like stone unyielding,
Slim Jim’s traps sparked, his cunning revealing.
Silas wove spells, his silver tongue sly,
Together they fought ‘neath a dark, dreaded sky.
(Chorus)
Toss a coin to your heroes, O Waterdeep’s pride,
Through peril and pain, they stand side by side!
With hearts forged in fire, their legend will soar,
For Trollskull’s brave souls, sing forevermore!
(Verse 3)
In a dungeon, Floon lay, by Mind Flayer torn,
A wizard was felled, potions claimed, battle-worn.
Dren’s mind was devoured, yet a Wish brought him back,
Through a halfling’s door, they escaped the attack.
(Verse 4)
Volo gave Trollskull, a manor to claim,
A tavern they’d build to ignite their fame.
Factions like Lords call, with Eyeless’s vow,
Their path to the treasure begins taking shape now.
(Chorus)
Toss a coin to your heroes, O Waterdeep’s pride,
Through peril and pain, they stand side by side!
With hearts forged in fire, their legend will soar,
For Trollskull’s brave souls, sing forevermore!
(Outro)
Raise tankards to Eyeless, Dren, and their kin,
In Trollskull’s warm hearth, their saga begins!
```

(Verse 1)
Come gather, good folk, let this tale ignite,
A fireball’s roar shook Trollskull at night.
A boy held beads of a deadly chain—
But who pulled the string? What mind, insane?

(Chorus)
So strum the lute, let the tale unfold,
Heroes of Trollskull, brazen and bold!
Eyeless shines with radiant flame,
Captain Mercer plays the shadows’ game.

(Verse 2)
To Gond’s great halls the party sped,
Where brass and cogs marked the path ahead.
Captain John scaled the temple wall,
Slipped not once—no fall at all!

(Bridge 1)
There Nim confessed with gears grown cold:
"I built him, yes—but he broke the mold."
A Nimblewright lost, with fire in hand—
We took the task, by Mirt’s demand.

(Verse 3)
Into the sewers, deep and vile,
The detector clicked—crept every mile.
They found a cult in serpent guise,
Rituals writ 'neath traitor skies!

(Bridge 2)
Eyeless stood where the torches failed,
Wreathed in light, his purpose unveiled.
Dren charged in, maul like thunder,
Struck down foes, tore spells asunder!

(Verse 4)
Captain John, in deadly dance,
Dodged through strikes like fate’s own chance.
Slim Jim mended wounds with grace,
A blur of bandage, charm, and mace.

(Verse 5)
Silas grinned—his boots now charred—
Two fireballs flew from his hand unmarred.
Scrolls we claimed in smoke and fear:
Flaming Sphere, Animate Dead, and more unclear!

(Final Chorus)
So raise your mugs, let echoes fly,
Varrick sings ‘neath Waterdeep’s sky!
Eyeless burns with righteous gleam,
Dren smites foes in every dream,
Slim Jim steadies, Silas schemes,
And Captain John haunts alley seams!

(Outro)
From gears to ghosts, from flame to blade,
The hunt begins, the path is laid.
Trollskull’s crew, in legend steeped—
By fire and fang, their oaths were deeped.
```
</td><td>```
In Waterdeep where sparks did fly,
A fireball lit the morning sky.
Through temple halls and secrets sworn,
A Nimblewright was thusly born.
To sewers deep the brave did crawl,
Where snakes with spells began to brawl.
Steel did clash and spells did flare,
As Eyeless fell 'neath poisoned air.
John struck true with blade so keen,
And Dren fought on with health so lean.
Slim Jim rose and then was floored,
While healing hands and faith restored.
But through it all, with spells alight,
One serpent’s bane stayed out of sight—
Oh Silas, bold, with magic mean...
Was untouched, yet cursed: his boots unclean!*
John struck true with blade so keen,
And Dren fought on with health so lean.
Slim Jim rose and then was floored,
While healing hands and faith restored.
```

# Session 4 – The Clockwork Trail and Gralhund Villa Bloodbath

**📍 Location:**<span style="white-space:pre-wrap;"> Trollskull Manor → Sea Ward → Gralhund Villa → Trollskull Basement</span>
**🎭 Party:**<span style="white-space:pre-wrap;"> Eyeless (Eirlys), Captain John Mercer, Dren, Slim Jim (Tiberius), Silas</span>
**📆 Date:**<span style="white-space:pre-wrap;"> 12/07/2025</span>
**🎚️ Level:**<span style="white-space:pre-wrap;"> Party reached </span>**Level 4**

---

## 📖 Summary

The party continued their hunt for the rogue Nimblewright using the magical detector, eventually tracking it to Gralhund Villa. After days of searching, screams from within the estate prompted the group to intervene. Inside, they discovered a brutal clash between Zhentarim agents and the Gralhunds’ household forces.

They fought through multiple floors, stabilized a wounded servant, and accidentally killed a friendly ally (unnoticed). Eyeless sent for the City Watch, who arrived in force. Slim Jim was arrested and sentenced to 10 days in prison and fined 200 gold; the others were released.

<span style="white-space:pre-wrap;">Later, the party was paid 10 platinum (40 later) by a hidden Zhentarim agent seeking refuge. Days afterward, they found the Nimblewright discarded in a trash heap. It now hides in Trollskull Manor’s basement—carrying a mysterious map. </span>

The party reached Level 4.

### 🧲 The Nimblewright Hunt Intensifies

<span style="white-space:pre-wrap;">After their battle in the sewers, the party resumed their investigation into the rogue Nimblewright. Using the magical detector provided by the Temple of Gond, they scoured the city over three days. Finally, the detector activated in the Sea Ward, outside </span>**Gralhund Villa**, a noble estate known for its antiques and farmland.

The party split up: some observed the grounds while others returned to Trollskull and nearby taverns to gather intel. Although locals knew little about the Gralhunds, their reputation as collectors made them plausible Nimblewright owners.

### 🏰 Screams at the Estate

<span style="white-space:pre-wrap;">As the group reconvened, </span>**screams rang out from within the villa**<span style="white-space:pre-wrap;">. The party forced entry through the front gate, discovering </span>**slain guards and servants**<span style="white-space:pre-wrap;">, and </span>**Zhentarim agents standing over the bodies**. A violent melee ensued as the party pushed inside.

<span style="white-space:pre-wrap;">On the stairs, they found a </span>**young servant girl bleeding out**<span style="white-space:pre-wrap;">. </span>**Eyeless stabilized her using Healing Hands**<span style="white-space:pre-wrap;">. </span>**Slim Jim suggested hiding her among corpses**<span style="white-space:pre-wrap;"> to protect her, which Eyeless firmly opposed. The girl was kept safe and eventually evacuated.</span>

### 🧹 Clearing the Manor

<span style="white-space:pre-wrap;">On the second floor, the party encountered a </span>**room of terrified servants**<span style="white-space:pre-wrap;">. Eyeless encouraged the most courageous one to flee and call the </span>**City Watch**.

<span style="white-space:pre-wrap;">Elsewhere, </span>**house guards were engaged in combat with invading Zhentarim**<span style="white-space:pre-wrap;">. The party rushed in. During the chaos, </span>**Silas accidentally unleashed a psychic blast**<span style="white-space:pre-wrap;"> that killed a </span>**friendly half-orc ally**<span style="white-space:pre-wrap;">. Thankfully, </span>**no one realized Silas was the source**.

[![image.png](https://bookstack.thecartwrights.nz/uploads/images/gallery/2025-07/scaled-1680-/image.png)](https://bookstack.thecartwrights.nz/uploads/images/gallery/2025-07/image.png)

<span style="white-space:pre-wrap;">The battle raged until the final thug was struck down by </span>**Slim Jim—just as the Watch arrived**.

### 🚨 Arrests &amp; Aftermath

**25 City Watch officers**<span style="white-space:pre-wrap;">, led by </span>**Detectives Barnabus Blastwind and Sergeant Cromley**<span style="white-space:pre-wrap;">, arrived and locked down the estate. Despite helping suppress the assault, the party was detained for questioning. </span>**Slim Jim was arrested**<span style="white-space:pre-wrap;"> for interfering in a noble’s estate and attacking suspects. He was sentenced to </span>**10 days locked up**<span style="white-space:pre-wrap;"> and a </span>**200 gold fine**. The rest were released without charges.

<span style="white-space:pre-wrap;">Afterward, the party was contacted discreetly by a </span>**female Zhentarim agent**<span style="white-space:pre-wrap;"> . She offered </span>**50 platinum**<span style="white-space:pre-wrap;"> for the group to help her </span>**stay hidden while the Watch investigated the Black Network**.

### 🤖 The Nimblewright Recovered

<span style="white-space:pre-wrap;">Three days later, while continuing their search, the party discovered the </span>**rogue Nimblewright discarded in a trash heap**<span style="white-space:pre-wrap;">. Damaged but functional, it was brought to </span>**Trollskull Manor and hidden in the basement**<span style="white-space:pre-wrap;">. The construct carried a </span>**mysterious map**, which the group is now investigating.

- **Campaign**: Waterdeep – Dragon Heist (custom blend)
- **Session**: 5
- **Dungeon Master**: Rewrok (Reuben)
- **Setting**: Dock Ward, City of the Dead, Trollskull Manor, Yawning Portal, South Ward

---

## 🧭 Overview

The party began with Slim Jim’s release from prison, fines cleared, and a visit from a merchant who offered potions, scrolls, and trinkets. Eyeless and Captain John each secured a Greater Healing Potion and a standing 20% discount.

At Grinda Garloth’s boathouse in the Dock Ward, the group discovered Zhentarim agents forcing her door while a dozen sellswords stood outside. Silas incinerated the mercenaries with a Fireball, then joined the others to finish off the Zhentarim inside. Grinda revealed she had given the Stone of Golorr to her rat familiar, who carried it to a mausoleum in the City of the Dead. She entrusted the adventurers with a key and directions.

At the mausoleum, the group found the familiar dead and the Stone missing. They recovered a second mysterious key, but were ambushed by 4 invisible duergar demanding the artifact. After a brutal fight, they killed the duergar, stashed their bodies inside, and learned from guards that three suspicious figures (a human and two halflings) had passed through earlier.

Back at Trollskull, the party returned the rogue Nimblewright to Nim, receiving curious inventions (a barking box and stilts) and persuading Nim and the Nimblewright to sneak away later to work at the tavern. A Zhentarim agent finished her stay at Trollskull, paid the rest of her 50 platinum, and offered future aid.

Following the key’s trail, the group consulted a locksmith who turned out to be a Harper. He directed them to Silvermane at the Yawning Portal. Silvermane offered three Harper tasks (a tailor, a blacksmith, and Renaer Neverember’s disappearance) and, after persuasion by Eyeless, confirmed their key belonged to a mill in the South Ward. The party set off toward it, with the Harper alliance freshly forged.

- **Dungeon Master:**<span style="white-space:pre-wrap;"> Reuben</span>
- <span style="white-space:pre-wrap;">**Date:** 15/02/2026</span>
- **Setting:**<span style="white-space:pre-wrap;"> Waterdeep (South Ward → sewers/underground rooms → derelict tower → alley ambush → temples → Trollskull Manor)</span>

## 🧭 Overview

Around ~8pm, the party pushed into a ruined South Ward windmill/tower while tracking the Stone’s trail. The first location was occupied by homeless men (four in the first downstairs room, and ~10 in a second room). Upstairs, they found two halflings—homeless hired help—and intimidated them into admitting the Stone had been moved to a wig shop cellar.

The cellar route dropped the party into the sewers. Eyeless carried Dren through shoulder-high sewage until they found a door leading into underground rooms. Inside, a halfling necromancer and skeletons were fighting kenku. The party third-partied the battle, focusing on the necromancer (Silas used an ice/frozen spell; exact spell not stated). Near the end, two kenku fled—Captain John Mercer pursued with Eyeless close behind, while the remaining party cleaned up the underground rooms.

That “cleanup” spiraled: Slim Jim discovered a large cabinet mimic. Silas managed to convince it back into cabinet form, but Slim Jim spotted an amulet in its mouth and tried to take it—getting his hand stuck, cutting skin off to free himself, then going back in until he finally succeeded. A secret magical door then disgorged a horde of undead corpses; the party lured them into the mimic room, re-aggravated the mimic, and withdrew to regroup with John and Eyeless—who were already confronting the fleeing kenku in a second derelict tower. The night ended with a hostage standoff involving masked children, a fight with three gazers, discovery of an arcane transport circle, a brutal alley ambush (intellect devourer, kobolds in disguise, and a bugbear), Emerald Enclave intervention, temple restoration, and a return to Trollskull around ~1am with the Stone secured.

- **Dungeon Master:**<span style="white-space:pre-wrap;"> Reuben</span>
- **Setting:**<span style="white-space:pre-wrap;"> Waterdeep (Yawning Portal, Sea Ward, Castle Ward, Market District, hidden vault approach, Vault of Dragons)</span>

## 🧭 Overview

<span style="white-space:pre-wrap;">The session opened with the party working out how to satisfy the Vault of Dragons’ three keys: a performance of “Your Beardly Face,” sunlight, and a gift from a queen. They learned the song was a common bagpipe duet, arranged a recording at the Golden Harp in the Sea Ward for 51 gold, secured a sunlight scroll from a magic shop, and obtained an audience with Laeral Silverhand, who ultimately gave them a swan-feather quill. The group also hit level 5 during this stretch, and Eyeless gained a celestial steed. </span>

<span style="white-space:pre-wrap;">With all three keys in hand, the party followed the Stone of Golorr to a derelict building. A hidden passage led to an adamantine door that responded to the bottle-song, Laeral’s feather, and sunlight. Beyond that, they faced a second dwarven puzzle: a hall of twelve iron doors marked with dwarven runes and a riddle about what dwarves love most. The party chose the </span>**Clan**<span style="white-space:pre-wrap;"> door, explored multiple puzzle-rooms, and eventually opened a trap door by offering the secret that they possessed the Stone of Golorr to the lips of a dwarven face tied to the god of secrets.</span>

<span style="white-space:pre-wrap;">At the bottom, the party reached the Vault and met an old dwarf calling himself Brock Klanghammer, who asked after Dagult Neverember and resisted giving up the treasure. When the party touched the hoard, the old dwarf dropped his staff and transformed into the gold dragon guardian Aurinax. A hard fight followed: Captain John Mercer climbed onto the transforming dragon, Eyeless fought from the ground with steed and smites, and the party eventually brought the creature down. Afterward, they discovered the published 100,000-gold figure was wildly off: the vault held roughly 500,000 gold pieces, around 65 gemstones worth 100 gold each, and an estimated total weight of 10,000 pounds. They ended the session alive, richer than expected, and immediately neck-deep in the problem of how much to keep, how much to return, and how not to look outrageously suspicious doing it. </span>

 **Captain John Mercer met the vault’s guardian head-on — and stayed on.**

## 🧩 Ongoing Threads &amp; Plot Hooks

- **Immediate objective:**<span style="white-space:pre-wrap;"> Decide how to remove, store, divide, or return the treasure without attracting disaster. The group was already debating multiple trips, carriages, bags of holding, and public cover stories by session end. </span>
- **Biggest unresolved mystery:**<span style="white-space:pre-wrap;"> What is the “right” disposition of the hoard, and how much of it will powerful people in Waterdeep know is missing if the party skims off the top?</span>
- **Faction / authority pressure:**<span style="white-space:pre-wrap;"> The money is established as embezzled wealth from Waterdeep’s citizens, and the party explicitly notes that other people are still hunting the gold.</span>
- **Stone of Golorr pressure:**<span style="white-space:pre-wrap;"> The group discussed leaving the Stone in the vault, but the transcript makes clear the three keys change after each lock, so abandoning it creates a new problem.</span>
- **Named NPC status:**<span style="white-space:pre-wrap;"> Laeral Silverhand is aware of the party and gave them a gift; Yagra joined the vault run as hired muscle; Nim was present in the vault and was stabilized after the fight</span>
- **Dagult Neverember thread:**<span style="white-space:pre-wrap;"> Brock asked where Dagult was; the party answered that he had run. That connection feels very much not dead, just inconvenient.</span>

## 🪝 Cliffhanger

- The party ended inside the Vault of Dragons with the hoard exposed, the guardian dead, and no clean way to move 10,000 pounds of treasure quietly.
- The immediate next problem is not “can we get rich?” but “how do we touch any of this without every faction in Waterdeep deciding we are now the problem?”

Slim Jim consistently fills the “get-it-done” gap: quick, hands-on problem solving, willingness to take risks, and an instinct for practical (sometimes morally questionable) solutions when pressure spikes. He’s also repeatedly stepped into a support role mid-crisis—patching people up, reviving allies, and staying in the fight even after being dropped himself.

</details><details id="bkmrk-%F0%9F%A7%A0-personality-%26-char"><summary>🧠 Personality &amp; Character Style</summary>

- **Pragmatic survivalist:**<span style="white-space: pre-wrap;"> Proposes solutions that prioritize outcomes and safety (even if they’re grim or socially risky), like hiding an injured servant among corpses to keep her alive (</span>**proposal rejected**).
- **Hands-on “tinkerer” vibe:**<span style="white-space: pre-wrap;"> His Rogue/Artificer multiclass is repeatedly framed as practical ingenuity rather than theory.</span>
- **Combat behavior:**<span style="white-space: pre-wrap;"> Willing to stay close enough to get hurt, take the stab, or eat the counterstrike—then keep moving. Not afraid to finish a fight decisively.</span>
- **Social posture:**<span style="white-space: pre-wrap;"> Not the main face, but contributes under pressure (e.g., cooperating during Watch fallout; navigating consequences after Gralhund Villa).</span>

Vajra loved an intriguing [arcane](https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Arcane "Arcane") challenge. She was focused on turning Waterdeep, and specifically her [Blackstaff Academy](https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Blackstaff_Academy "Blackstaff Academy"), into the center of [magical](https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Magical "Magical") study in [Faerûn](https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Faer%C3%BBn "Faerûn"). Khondar took Vajra to a secret lair beneath a house he had bought from the Open Lord [Dagult Neverember](https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Dagult_Neverember "Dagult Neverember") and attempted to torture the secrets of the Blackstaff out of her. While traveling through the sewers on an unrelated task, [Laraelra Harsard](https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Laraelra_Harsard "Laraelra Harsard") and [Meloon Wardragon](https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Meloon_Wardragon "Meloon Wardragon") passed close to Khondar's hideout and heard Vajra's screams. Laraelra tracked down ownership of the house to [Renaer Neverember](https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Renaer_Neverember "Renaer Neverember") and confronted him about the noises she had heard in the basement. Larealra, Meloon, Renaer, and several of his friends entered the residence and poked around in the basement, finding nothing unusual. While they were inside the house, Khondar and his son, in the guise of Samark, entered and confronted Renaer, showing him the deed to the home and kicking the group out of the residence. Laraelra knew something strange was going on, because "Samark" and Khondar were acting like old friends even though they were known to hate each other.[<span class="cite-bracket">\[</span>2<span class="cite-bracket">\]</span>](https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Vajra_Safahr#cite_note-Blackstaff_Tower-2)

Renaer and friends returned through the sewers and found the secret sublevel dungeon in which Vajra was imprisoned. They rescued Vajra and took her back to the Neverember mansion. When Khondar realized that Renaer had helped Vajra to escape, he framed Renaer and associates for Vajra's "murder". The [City Watch](https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/City_Watch_(Waterdeep) "City Watch (Waterdeep)") tracked Renaer and crew to the Neverember estate, and the group used a secret rooftop gate to travel to an old family mansion called <span class="new" data-uncrawlable-url="L3dpa2kvVmFyYWRyYXM/YWN0aW9uPWVkaXQmcmVkbGluaz0x" title="Varadras (page does not exist)">Varadras</span> outside Waterdeep. Vajra was still only occasionally lucid, as the consciousnesses of previous Blackstaffs fought for control of her mind. After a few days, they returned to Waterdeep and entered [Blackstaff Tower](https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Blackstaff_Tower "Blackstaff Tower").[<span class="cite-bracket">\[</span>2<span class="cite-bracket">\]</span>](https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Vajra_Safahr#cite_note-Blackstaff_Tower-2)

In the tower, she was tested by the previous Blackstaffs and was allowed to officially assume the role of Blackstaff. Vajra, now fully in control of her abilities, sent <span class="new" data-uncrawlable-url="L3dpa2kvU3BlY3RyYWxfaG91bmQ/YWN0aW9uPWVkaXQmcmVkbGluaz0x" title="Spectral hound (page does not exist)">spectral hounds</span> to stop Khondar from entering the tower. The hounds rent Khondar to shreds, and his animated [skeleton](https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Skeleton "Skeleton") was left as a warning to anyone foolish enough to attempt entry.[<span class="cite-bracket">\[</span>2<span class="cite-bracket">\]</span>](https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Vajra_Safahr#cite_note-Blackstaff_Tower-2)

</figcaption></figure>Later, in the [Year of the Scarlet Witch, 1491 DR](https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/1491_DR "1491 DR"), Vajra was increasingly worried.
