Dungeon Master

Reuben / Rewrock

Setting

Velkynvelve, the lift shaft, and the Underdark tunnels below; flashback to Vedykar, Southern Karrnath, Eberron

🎬 Previously On...

The party began the campaign as prisoners of the drow, stripped of their gear, restrained by anti-magic shackles, and held in the prison outpost of Velkynvelve. With the help of Stool’s telepathic spores, they began planning a breakout alongside the other captives.

During the chaos of a horn sounding elsewhere in the outpost, the prisoners discovered their cell door had been left unsecured. They surged out, fought drow guards on the bridge, recovered keys and scavenged weapons, and pushed toward Ilvara Mizzrym’s quarters, where a large chest was believed to contain their confiscated gear.

📖 Overview

Session 2 opened three years earlier in Vedykar, Southern Karrnath, Eberron, where a young dragonborn who would become Sarix “Dose” Jorasco was found wounded after a skirmish, clutching a small egg. Yulara d’Jorasco chose to treat him when others hesitated, seeing not a monster or outsider, but a patient still fighting to live. That act of mercy became the beginning of Dose’s place within House Jorasco and his bond with Nettle.

Back in Velkynvelve, the escape erupted into open confrontation with Ilvara Mizzrym. The party demanded their gear, refused to return to captivity, and fought through poison, scourge strikes, Spider Vortex, and magical darkness before Ilvara escaped in a swirl of silvery mist. Edric opened the confiscated-gear chest with Knock, Varang and Iragon dragged the wounded back from the edge, Dose freed Nettle, and the group fled through the outpost with a crowd of prisoners.

The escape became a frantic scramble through spider-haunted chambers, lift shafts, approaching quaggoths, and demon-choked tunnels. The party recovered limited supplies, carried the mysterious chest with them, survived a battered winged demon’s stunning screech, and vanished into the Underdark while Ilvara’s voice echoed behind them, ordering her forces to bring the fugitives back alive.

  • House Jorasco Enclave: The place where Yulara d’Jorasco nursed Dose back to health, trained him, and fought for his place within the house.
  • Velkynvelve: The drow prison outpost where the party began as captives and where the escape escalated into full chaos.
  • Ilvara’s Chamber: The room where the party confronted Ilvara Mizzrym and recovered their confiscated gear from the locked chest.
  • Lower Chamber: The area below Ilvara’s room where Nettle was heard howling and later found chained.
  • Upper Study / Spider Lair: An upper room investigated by Edric, guarded by a giant spider and not fully cleared.
  • Supply Rooms: Rooms searched during the escape, where the party gathered enough rations to add roughly two days of food per character.
  • Lift Shaft: The dangerous route down from Velkynvelve, requiring operation from above and coordination across multiple escape loads.
  • Underdark Tunnels: The dark maze below Velkynvelve where the fugitives encountered the battered winged demon and began their flight from drow pursuit.
  • Old Bridge Gap: A gap and lower path used during the final escape route into the tunnels.
⚔️ Session Highlights
  • The session opened with Dose’s flashback, revealing how Yulara d’Jorasco saved him and helped him earn a place in House Jorasco despite his lack of bloodline or dragonmark.
  • The party confronted Ilvara Mizzrym in her chamber and refused to return to captivity.
  • Varang hit Ilvara with Inflict Wounds, Vorgrath raged and attacked with his axe, Dose marked and shot her, Edric used Mind Sliver and Magic Missile, Iragon blasted and retaliated, and Aeris attempted to control the battlefield with druidic magic.
  • Ilvara’s scourge struck brutally, dealing heavy piercing and poison damage and inflicting lingering injuries on Varang and Vorgrath.
  • Ilvara unleashed Spider Vortex, causing severe piercing damage and restraint effects in a 20-foot burst of nightmare spider magic.
  • Ilvara cast magical darkness, exploited the party’s inability to see through it, and escaped in silvery mist.
  • Edric opened the confiscated-gear chest with Knock. The key was later confirmed to have been upstairs, but the party did not rely on it.
  • Dose went below and freed Nettle, reuniting with his drake companion.
  • Varang and Iragon stabilised and healed badly wounded allies, including Eldeth, Aeris, and Dose.
  • Edric investigated upstairs, triggered the giant spider, survived its bite through Shield and Arcane Ward, and fled back down with a very reasonable hatred of large spiders.
  • The party gathered supplies, including roughly two days of rations per character, but long-term Underdark survival remained far from solved.
  • The group coordinated a lift escape for roughly fifteen fugitives, requiring multiple loads and tense decisions about who went where.
  • Edric insisted the large chest be brought along because it remained important, and the DM later confirmed the chest was relevant as a vessel.
  • Feather Fall was used during the descent to keep part of the escaping group from dying the stupid gravity death.
  • In the tunnels below, the party encountered a battered winged demon, survived its stunning screech, and watched Iragon finish it with a decisive Eldritch Blast.
  • The session ended with the fugitives running into the Underdark while Ilvara’s forces searched behind them.
🎬 Key Scenes

The Patient with the Egg

Three years earlier in Vedykar, Yulara d’Jorasco knelt beside a wounded young dragonborn found after a skirmish, his scales marked with ash and blood, his arms wrapped around a small egg. Where others hesitated, Yulara chose treatment, deciding that if he still fought to live, then House Jorasco would fight with him.

Ilvara’s Chamber

Vorgrath stepped toward Ilvara Mizzrym and demanded his axe while the party crowded the doorway behind him. The stolen-gear chest waited inside the room, but between the prisoners and their freedom stood the priestess who still believed they belonged to her.

The Spider Vortex

Ilvara’s magic tore through the chamber in a storm of venomous legs, piercing pain, and restraining force. The escape nearly collapsed there as allies were battered, trapped, and dropped, forcing Varang and Iragon to drag life back into bodies that were running out of it.

The Spider Upstairs

Edric climbed into the upper chamber while the others recovered gear and gathered themselves. A giant spider emerged from the shadows and bit him, only for his Shield spell and Arcane Ward to absorb the worst of the attack before he fled back down with urgent news and excellent survival instincts.

The Lift Escape

The fugitives gathered at the lift while alarms and distant horns echoed through Velkynvelve. With too many people, too little time, and enemies closing in, the group worked through lift loads, Feather Fall, climbing, and sheer panic to get as many prisoners out as possible.

The Demon in the Tunnels

Below the outpost, a battered winged demon shrieked with enough force to stagger the fleeing group. Edric weakened it, and Iragon answered with a blast of eldritch force that tore the creature’s head free, buying the fugitives another breath of survival.

🧵 Ongoing Threads & Plot Hooks
  • Drow Pursuit: Ilvara Mizzrym survived and ordered the fugitives brought back alive. The party escaped Velkynvelve, but not the consequences.
  • Underdark Survival: The party now faces the tunnels below with limited supplies, uncertain routes, and the constant threat of exhaustion, hunger, darkness, madness, and hostile creatures.
  • The Chest as Vessel: The large chest from Ilvara’s chamber is confirmed to matter beyond just gear recovery. Its exact purpose remains unknown.
  • Nettle Restored: Dose has recovered Nettle, but the drake’s condition after captivity and the full implications of that bond remain important.
  • The Giant Spider Upstairs: The upper chamber was not fully explored, and the spider remains alive. Whatever it guarded or nested near was left behind.
  • Eldeth’s Request: Eldeth Feldrun still wants her shield and warhammer returned to Gauntlgrym if she does not survive.
  • Prisoner Dynamics: Roughly fifteen fugitives escaped together. Their loyalty, fear, usefulness, and future choices may shape the party’s survival.
  • Demonic Corruption: The prison was already under demonic pressure, and the party has now encountered another demon in the tunnels below.
  • Character Flashbacks: The DM confirmed the plan to keep opening sessions with character-focused flashbacks, tying backstories into the present campaign.

  • Preserve Life: Used as a pool of 15 HP divided among badly wounded allies.
  • Arcane Ward: Edric’s ward absorbed damage during the spider encounter and needs ongoing Foundry tracking cleanup.
  • Spider Bite: The giant spider’s bite caused nausea and disadvantage on ability checks.
  • Lift Operation: The lift required operation from above and could not move the whole escape group at once.
  • Feather Fall: Used during the escape descent to prevent a fatal fall for part of the group.
  • Goodberry: Only one berry was created due to the session’s roll / handling, despite the spell normally being able to create more.
