Session 05: The Breath Beneath the Earth
šµ Music
"The Breath Beneath the Earth" ā Varrick Songweave
[Intro]
Breathe low, stone below,
no sun remembers where we go.
Blood on the shrine, fire on the shore,
Sloobludop sings no more.
[Verse 1]
We ran where the black lake swallowed the light,
past broken nets and burning reed,
while a two-headed shadow drank from the night
and feasted where the faithful bleed.
Shuushar fell where the waters cried,
peace in a place gone mad,
and Ploopploopeen knelt with the dead at her side
for every child she had.
[Pre-Chorus]
Donāt look back, donāt speak his name,
donāt count the bodies in the flame.
Take up your blade, take up your breath,
and walk the road that smells of death.
[Chorus]
Thereās breath beneath the earth,
thereās hunger in the stone,
thereās a road made out of spider silk
where no one walks alone.
The webs know when youāre bleeding,
the dark knows what youāre worth,
and every prayer goes silent
in the breath beneath the earth.
[Verse 2]
A map from the dead and a road through the black,
Gracklstugh somewhere ahead,
but the lake rolled deep with teeth in its back,
so we took the land instead.
Yuck Yuck grinned and Spiderbait stared,
two coins for the way,
āStep where we step, and donāt be scared,
unless the webs donāt sway.ā
[Pre-Chorus]
Donāt touch twice, donāt run too fast,
donāt trust the lines that look like paths.
Wrap your feet, and hush your fear,
something old is listening here.
[Chorus]
Thereās breath beneath the earth,
thereās hunger in the stone,
thereās a road made out of spider silk
where no one walks alone.
The webs know when youāre bleeding,
the dark knows what youāre worth,
and every prayer goes silent
in the breath beneath the earth.
[Bridge]
Dose crossed the strand where the chasm sighed,
claws on the silk, no room to fall,
Edric read what a dead man wrote
while spiders crawled the wall.
Varang burned one bright as dawn,
Aeris kept his aim,
Iragonās spring-light split the dark,
and Vorgrath answered rage with flame.
[Verse 3]
Fourteen meals from the dead menās packs,
two scrolls wrapped dry in thread,
a halfling breathing beneath pale wax,
and a journal by the dead.
Thalen wrote, āThe path is bait,
the drow have marked the thread.
And if you see two shapes too late,
youāre already dead.ā
[Final Chorus]
Thereās breath beneath the earth,
thereās hunger in the stone,
thereās a road made out of spider silk
where no one walks alone.
The webs know when youāre bleeding,
the dark knows what youāre worth,
and every prayer goes silent
in the breath beneath the earth.
[Outro]
Breathe low, stone below,
no sun remembers where we go.
Two shapes move where no lights burn,
and still the path waits for our return.
šŖ Campaign Arc
- Campaign: Out of the Abyss
- Dungeon Master: Reuben / Rewrock
- Session Number: 5
- Session Title: The Breath Beneath the Earth
- Date: 2026-06-24
- Setting: Sloobludop, the Darklake region, and the Silken Path
- Player Attendance: Mike absent; Vorgrath Kael was DM-controlled
š§ Overview
The session opened with the party still dangerously close to Demogorgon. The demon lord remained near the shrine in Sloobludop, crushing kuo-toa, flinging victims aside, drinking from the blood offerings, and feeding among the dead rather than pursuing the fleeing party directly. The horror of that restraint made the escape feel even worse: the party survived not because they could oppose him, but because they were too small to matter.
At the outer gate, the group found the kuo-toa guards gone and recovered their confiscated weapons from a box. They also gathered additional nets and fishing poles before leaving the settlement. Dose searched the corpse of Bloppblippodd, recovering a Darklake region map and minor symbolic trinkets or amulets. Ploopploopeen, grieving and devastated by the deaths of her children and people, refused to continue. She remained behind to perform rites for the dead.
Edric pushed his luck with the grieving kuo-toa leader, making cold comments about the disaster and the choices that had led to it. Ploopploopeen slapped him and later cast Sacred Flame at him, while Ront shoved Edric away and told him to leave her alone. Varang treated Ploopploopeenās grief with far more care, offering a rare moment of compassion amid the ruins.
Before the party fully left the shadow of Sloobludop, Iragon experienced a vision of Titaniaās Spring Court. In that memory, Titania renewed his oath and sent him to cleanse a blight in Vercy Wood, promising a boon if he succeeded and banishment from her court if he failed. The vision framed Iragonās service not as simple devotion, but as a bargain with real consequences.
After leaving Sloobludop, the party studied the recovered map and debated whether to travel by water or land. The Darklake offered the possibility of speed, but its routes were uncertain, its boats fragile, and the waters below clearly dangerous. Sarith helped explain the risks of Darklake travel and navigation, Jimjar identified Gracklstugh as a trade city where supplies might be possible, and Prince Derendil pointed out that simply following the coast was unrealistic because Underdark tunnels and cliffs would force the group away from easy routes. The party eventually chose the land route, knowing it might make them easier for drow pursuers to track.
The journey brought several days of travel, minor hazards, and growing pressure among the fugitives. Ront and Eldeth had a falling out, Topsy and Turvy remained close to each other, and the party eventually reached a fork in the road. They chose the right-hand route to avoid the area associated with spider dangers. A rockfall later struck Aeris and Vorgrath, injuring them but not stopping the group.
The party eventually reached a sign pointing toward the Silken Web. There they encountered the goblin guides Yuck Yuck and Spiderbait, who wore web-wrapped feet and offered to guide the party through the Silken Path for two gold per day total. They could not promise perfect safety, but they claimed to know which routes to avoid. Varang warned them directly not to betray the group, not to walk behind them, and not to bring flame carelessly near the bridge.
The Silken Path revealed itself as a web-strung maze above terrible drops, with the Darklake visible far below. At one point the party saw huge creatures fighting in the water beneath them, a violent reminder that the lake route would not have been gentle. The party pressed on through web bridges and ruins, eventually finding cocoons, dead dwarves, an isolated magical cocoon.
Dose attempted to recover the magical cocoon and nearly fell, but Spiderbait saved him. Edric cast Spider Climb on Dose, allowing him to cross safely and retrieve it. Inside the cocoon, the party found a living but paralysed or sleeping halfling with fang marks. Varang carried the halfling after the rescue. Nearby, the party found useful supplies, including rations, a Scroll of Barkskin, a Scroll of Cloud of Daggers, and Thalen Marrisās journal, The Breath Beneath the Earth.
The journal transformed the Silken Path from a dangerous crossing into a known predator trap. It warned that the webs carried messages through vibration, that drow marked and used the paths, and that some things in the web were worse than spiders. Its final page described two silent shapes moving through the strands ā not spiders, not drow, and already too close.
The session ended with a spider ambush. Doseās Detect Poison and Disease warned the party that venomous creatures were nearby, giving them enough warning to prepare. The fight spilled across sticky webs and dangerous drops as several companions slipped, fell, or became restrained. Ront, Prince Derendil, Nettle, Yuck Yuck, Spiderbait, and the party all contributed to the battle. By the end, the spiders were dead, everyone had been cut free from the webs, and the group remained alive but still deep in the Silken Path.

šļø Key Scenes
The Ruin of Sloobludop
As the party fled Sloobludop, Demogorgon remained near the shrine, crushing kuo-toa, flinging victims aside, and drinking from the blood offerings. The creatureās attention was terrifying precisely because it did not need to chase them. It had already broken the town.
The Grief of Ploopploopeen
At the edge of the ruined settlement, Ploopploopeen refused to abandon her dead. Varang treated her grief with compassion, while Edricās colder comments pushed her past endurance. She slapped him, later called divine fire against him, and Ront shoved him away before the party finally left her to the rites.
Oath Beneath Blossoms
Iragon stood once more beneath the living light of Titaniaās Spring Court, surrounded by blossoms, butterflies, and the weight of royal expectation. Titania renewed his oath and sent him toward Vercy Wood, where an old blight waited beyond the reach of her light.
The Cocoon in the Ruins
Among the Silken Path ruins, the party found a cocoon that radiated magic. Edric tested it with Mage Hand, Dose tried to reach it and nearly fell, and Spiderbait caught him before the webs claimed him. With Spider Climb carrying him safely across the strands, Dose brought the cocoon back and cut free a living halfling.
The Journal in the Webs
Near the cocooned victims, the party discovered Thalen Marrisās journal. Its pages turned the Silken Path from a dangerous road into something worse: a predator-built trap, watched by spiders, marked by drow, and haunted by two silent shapes that were neither.
The Spider Ambush
After Detect Poison and Disease warned of venomous creatures nearby, the webs came alive with movement. Spiders attacked across the strands, NPCs slipped or fell, and the party fought through webbing, chasms, and panic. By the end, the spiders were dead, the party was free, and the path ahead felt even less forgiving.
š§µ Ongoing Threads & Plot Hooks
- Drow Pursuit: The party chose the land route, knowing it may make them easier for drow hunters to track.
- Demonic Corruption: Demogorgonās appearance at Sloobludop confirmed that something far worse than ordinary Underdark danger is moving through the region.
- Iragonās Fey Quest: Titania sent Iragon to cleanse a blight in Vercy Wood. Success promises a boon beyond his oath; failure means banishment from her court.
- The Darklake Map: The recovered map gives the party some regional knowledge, but its routes remain dangerous, uncertain, and difficult to navigate.
- Gracklstugh: The duergar trade city remains the partyās likely destination for supplies and direction.
- Stoolās Goal: Stool still wants to reach Neverlight Grove, but he does not know the way.
- Thalen Marrisās Journal: The party recovered a survival account warning that the Silken Path is a trap, that drow use the webs as hunting routes, and that worse things move there.
- Two Shapes in the Webs: The journalās final page described two silent shapes moving through the webs, neither spiders nor drow. Their nature remains unknown.
- Drow Web Markings: The journal warned that a strand marked with a single silver bead is a drow signal and should be avoided.
- The Rescued Halfling: Varang is carrying the unnamed halfling rescued from the magical cocoon. Their identity, story, and destination remain unknown.
- Yuck Yuck and Spiderbait: The goblin guides have proven useful, but their loyalty is tied to payment and survival rather than trust.

Noteworthy Items
The Breath Beneath the Earth: A grim survival account written by Thalen Marris. The journal describes the Underdark as something almost alive and warns that the Silken Path is less a road than a trap built by predators. Its final page warns of two shapes moving through the webs that are not spiders and not drow.
Darklake Region Map: The recovered map gave the party enough information to debate water and land routes, but not enough certainty to make either option safe.
š Full Journal: The Breath Beneath the Earth
The Breath Beneath the Earth
I, Thalen Marris, write this second account of my travels in the Underdark. Blasted goblins burned my previous journal.
The air changes first. It thickens, grows heavy with minerals and memory. I followed a fissure down past the last roots of the surface trees, where the stone itself seemed to breathe. Every exhale carried whispers ā not words, but intent. I think the Underdark is alive. Not metaphorically. Alive like a lung, inhaling explorers and exhaling bones.
I marked the walls with chalk sigils to find my way back. When I returned, the marks were gone. The stone had healed.
The River That Flows Without Water
I found a chasm where light bends wrong. No water, yet the sound of rushing current fills the air. I threw a pebble ā it vanished mid-fall, swallowed by invisible motion. The duergar call it the Shadowflow, a current of darkness that carries echoes instead of matter.
I tied a rope and lowered a lantern. The flame stretched thin, then split into two. One burned bright, the other inverted ā a flame of shadow. I cut the rope before it could reach me.
The Hunger That Watches
I found a cavern lined with mirrors of obsidian. When I looked into them, I saw myself ā but thinner, hungrier, eyes hollow as if the reflection had been starving for years. It moved before I did. I smashed the mirror, but the shards kept whispering my name. I buried them under stone. Still, I dream of that reflection crawling free.
The Light That Lies
I saw light today. Real light ā or so I thought. It shimmered like dawn through a crack in the stone. When I crawled toward it, I found a fungus that mimicked sunlight perfectly. It burned my skin when I touched it. The duergar call it Falsefire. They say it feeds on hope.
I laughed until I cried. Then I kept walking.
If You Find This, Turn Back
I write this with shaking hands. The webs beneath me tremble with every step, and I cannot tell if it is the wind... or the things that hunt by vibration.
If you have found my pack, then you are already too close.
The Silken Paths are not a road. They are a trap disguised as one. A bridge built by predators who learned long ago that prey prefers a straight line.
If you must cross, then read what I have learned. Read fast.
The Webs Speak
The webs are alive with messages. Not written but felt.
When the strands hum low, something heavy is moving. When they twitch sharply, something is stalking. When they go still... that is when you should fear the most.
Stillness means the hunters are waiting.
I tried to mimic the spidersā rhythm with my steps. It worked for a time. But the drow scouts know the patterns too.
What They Donāt Tell You About the Spiders
Everyone warns of giant spiders. They are fools.
The spiders are not the worst of it.
What to watch for:
The pale ones ā spiders that have lived so long in darkness their bodies are translucent. You wonāt see them until theyāre already on you.
The brood-mothers ā they do not kill. They paralyze. They keep you warm while their young feed.
The web-leeches ā small, silent, and drawn to blood. They drop from above and burrow into soft places.
If you feel a sudden warmth on your neck, do not swat it. Cut it. Out.
The Drow Own These Paths
I saw them twice.
Once from afar ā shadows moving with purpose, not hunger. Once up close ā too close.
They do not fear the spiders. They command them.
I overheard one whisper:
āLet the webs take the weak. We claim the rest.ā
If you see a strand marked with a single silver bead, avoid it. It is a drow signal. A hunting route.
Safe Routes, If Such Things Exist
I mapped what I could. The webs shift, but some truths remain.
Path A ā The Taut Strands. These are safe from collapse but are patrolled by spiders. Move slowly. Do not run. Running makes the webs sing.
Path B ā The Slack Lines. These dip dangerously but are rarely used by predators. If you fall, you will fall far. If you donāt fall, you might live.
Path C ā The Dead Webs. Grey, brittle, unmoving. Avoid them. They are the remnants of battles between things too large to imagine.
Something killed the spiders here. Something that does not leave bodies.
The Voices in the Dark
I heard whispering last night. Not words ā intentions.
A presence beneath the webs. A hunger older than the spiders, older than the drow.
When I slept, I dreamed of a vast shape moving under the chasm floor, brushing the webs from below like a finger testing a harp string.
If you hear the whispers, do not answer. If you answer, it will know your name.
If You Must Survive
I leave these final instructions for whoever finds me.
- Carry no open flame. Fire angers the brood-mothers.
- Wrap your boots in cloth. Muffle your steps.
- Never touch two strands at once. It creates a signal predators understand as āprey trapped.ā
- If a strand vibrates three times, hide. That is the spidersā hunting call.
- If a strand vibrates once... run. That is the drow.
- And if the webs go silent ā if every strand around you suddenly stills ā
Do not breathe. Do not move. Do not pray.
It can hear prayers.
Final Page
I see them now. Two shapes moving through the webs, silent as falling dust.
Not spiders. Not drow.
Something worse.
If you find my body, burn it. Do not let the webs take me.
And if you hear something moving above youā
It is already too late.
āļø Rules & Mechanics Notes
- Dragging bodies while dashing: Allowed during the escape, provided the character was not over-encumbered.
- Difficult terrain: Bodies and crowded spaces complicated movement during the flight from Sloobludop.
- Ploopploopeenās Sacred Flame: Edric passed the save and avoided the effect.
- Rockfall: Aeris and Vorgrath were struck during travel and took bludgeoning damage.
- Spider Climb: Edric cast Spider Climb on Dose, allowing him to retrieve the magical cocoon safely.
- Detect Poison and Disease: Doseās spell warned the party of nearby venomous creatures before the spider ambush.
- Web restraints: Several characters and NPCs were restrained during the spider fight, but all were freed by the end of the session.
- Heroic Inspiration: Edric received session MVP / inspiration.
š¬ Memorable Moments
- Edric survived being slapped, burned at with sacred magic, and shoved away from a grieving kuo-toa leader. Technically alive, morally debatable.
- Ront stepped in when Edric pushed Ploopploopeen too far, showing there is more going on with him than brute-force orc violence.
- Varang treated Ploopploopeenās grief with compassion while the town collapsed behind them.
- Spiderbait proved immediately useful by saving Dose from falling during the cocoon rescue.
- The party looked down from the Silken Path and saw enormous creatures fighting in the Darklake below, which made the earlier boat-route debate feel even less comforting.
- Thalen Marrisās journal turned the Silken Path from ādangerous spider roadā into āpredator-built nightmare harp that may hear prayers.ā Lovely place. Terrible brochure.

ā³ Cliffhanger
The party ended the session alive and freed from the spider webs, but still deep within the Silken Path. The spiders had been beaten back, the rescued halfling was in Varangās care, and Thalen Marrisās journal had turned the road ahead into something far worse than a simple web crossing.
The journal warned that the webs carried messages, that drow used the Silken Path as a hunting route, and that some strands marked with silver beads should be avoided. Worst of all, its final page described two silent shapes moving through the dark ā not spiders, not drow, and already too close.
The party survived the first bite of the Silken Path. The path itself was not finished with them.
