🧭 Overview
The session opened two years in the past beneath a cold desert sky. Vorgrath Kael had been hired to guide a merchant named Randall and his young son Aaron toward Baldur’s Gate. The evening began quietly, with a small campfire, talk of the city ahead, and Aaron’s innocent certainty that the immense desert was beautiful despite the cold.
That peace ended when two goblins wearing red sashes crept into the camp. One whispered that “the egg is ready” before the pair murdered Randall and Aaron. Vorgrath reacted with overwhelming rage, killing both attackers with his bare hands. When the fury passed, he buried the merchant and his son beneath heavy stones, carved their names into the grave, and swore that nobody he cared for would die before him again. With that vow unresolved and the red-sashed goblins’ words unexplained, he continued alone toward Baldur’s Gate.
Back in the present, the party continued along the Silken Path under the guidance of Yuck Yuck and Spiderbait. Varang examined the unconscious halfling rescued from the cocoon and confirmed that he was stable, recovering naturally from spider venom or tranquilisation. Ahead, the goblin guides became concerned when they found part of an ancient shelter ruin destroyed; the wall had been intact when they passed through only three days earlier.
The group had little time to investigate. Three quick tugs travelled through the webs behind them—the hunting signal described in Thalen Marris’s journal. The party hurried toward the ruins and attempted to hide, but their movement alerted a drow and two quaggoths sheltering there. The drow called them “more slaves,” cast Faerie Fire across the approach, and ordered the quaggoths forward. A second drow and a third quaggoth later arrived from the southern path, turning the clash into a prolonged battle across broken stone, narrow bridges, and web-strung drops.
Vorgrath charged into the first drow and killed the slaver with a single greataxe blow before later cutting down the second with a Reckless Attack. Dose fought from range with Hunter’s Mark, landed two consecutive longbow critical hits, and coordinated Nettle’s attacks while helping delay the southern reinforcements. Iragon used a critical Divine Smite to destroy a quaggoth and later used Fey Step to carry Vorgrath directly into the remaining enemy line.
Varang struck with Sacred Flame, killed a quaggoth with their mace, and kept wounded allies standing through Healing Word and Cure Wounds. Aeris used Shocking Grasp to escape close combat before shaping the stone beneath the final quaggoth into a slide and sending it into the webs below. Edric supported the fight with Toll the Dead and Thunderwave, then determined that the drow had approached from the south.
With the enemies defeated, the party searched the ruins and prepared a safer shelter. Aeris recovered cloth from the old mattresses and used it to wrap his feet for better protection on the webs, encouraging the others to do the same. The group found a bard’s written ballad among the ruined furnishings and took a long rest. During the night, the rescued halfling finally awoke and introduced himself as Fargus Rumblefoot. Grateful for the rescue, he offered to guide the party to a tomb along the route toward Gracklstugh in exchange for a share of any treasure. He also handed over what he claimed was a Potion of Invisibility, which Dose accepted, while Aeris gave Fargus the rapier recovered from the fallen drow.
The relief did not last. The party realised that Topsy and Turvy had vanished. Sarith recalled seeing the twins during the battle, whispering closely to one another, but nobody had noticed when they left. A search found no tracks. Edric’s Detect Magic revealed a small patch of unidentified magical fur near the bridge, but neither Fargus nor the goblin guides recognised it, and no direct connection to the missing twins could be proven. Dose found no nearby venomous creatures or disease, though he did recover two old spider fangs from a corpse in another ruined building. Before leaving, Edric placed an Alarm across the bridge to warn him if anyone followed while the party remained within range.
Because the drow had come from the south, the party followed the northern path. Farther along, they discovered the enormous skeletal remains of an ancient gold dragon, its flesh stripped away over centuries by spiders and other Underdark scavengers. Edric cast Spider Climb on Dose, who also used Jump before exploring the bones. Within the dragon’s mouth he recovered two surviving gold scales and an ordinary javelin, which was ultimately given to Vorgrath.
Stool identified ten unusually large pygmy-wart mushrooms growing around the remains, explaining that eating them could reproduce the effect of Enlarge or Reduce. The party also gathered five pieces of fire lichen. Dose then approached an old chest among the bones and joked that it had better not be a mimic. The chest immediately twisted into a hungry shape and snapped at his hand. Dose pulled free before its teeth closed, and the session ended before the party could begin the fight. Dose was voted the Session 6 MVP and received inspiration.

🎞️ Key Scenes
The Vow Beneath the Stars
Vorgrath knelt beneath a paling desert sky beside the bodies of Aaron and the murdered merchant. With blood drying on his hands, he raised a grave of heavy stones, carved their names into the rock, and swore that nobody he cared for would ever die before him again.
Three Tugs in the Dark
Dose and Aeris froze as three sharp vibrations travelled through the webbing behind the party. The warning from Thalen Marris’s journal returned with sudden clarity: somewhere in the dark, the spiders had begun to hunt.
Leave My Friends Alone
Vorgrath charged through the ruined shelter with his greataxe raised, roaring at the drow to leave his friends alone. The first slaver barely had time to react before the axe struck upward and ended the fight in a single brutal blow.
The Twins Were Gone
Edric stood near the bridge holding a small patch of fur that glimmered beneath Detect Magic. Sarith’s only useful memory was that Topsy and Turvy had been whispering during the battle; beyond that, the ruins offered no tracks and no answer.
Gold Bones, Hungry Teeth
Dose climbed across the enormous skull of the gold dragon and reached toward an old chest lodged among the bones. He joked that it had better not be a mimic just before the lid twisted, teeth opened, and the chest snapped at his hand.
🧵 Ongoing Threads & Plot Hooks
- The Red Sashes: The goblins who murdered Randall and Aaron wore matching red sashes. Their organisation, employer, and reason for the attack remain unknown.
- “The Egg Is Ready”: The phrase spoken before the desert murders remains unexplained and may connect to Vorgrath’s past.
- Topsy and Turvy: The twins disappeared during or shortly after the battle. They left no visible tracks.
- The Magical Fur: Edric found unidentified magical fur near the bridge after the twins vanished. No one recognised it, and no direct connection has been confirmed.
- Fargus’s Tomb: Fargus offered to guide the party to a tomb on the route toward Gracklstugh in exchange for a share of its treasure.
- The Potion of Invisibility: Dose carries the potion given by Fargus, but the group could not independently verify its identity.
- Drow Pursuit: The defeated drow came from the southern path, confirming that hostile drow remain active along the Silken Path.
- Thalen Marris’s Warnings: The journal’s information about web signals was proven accurate. Its other warnings remain relevant.
- The Gold Dragon and the Mimic: The party has not finished searching the dragon remains, and the mimic is now awake.

⏳ Cliffhanger
Among the ribs and shattered bones of the ancient gold dragon, the old chest twisted into a mouth. Dose tore his hand away as teeth snapped shut where his fingers had been, leaving the party facing a newly awakened mimic before anyone had rolled initiative. Behind them, Topsy and Turvy remained missing, the magical fur remained unexplained, and the drow-controlled southern path waited in the dark. Ahead lay Fargus’s promised tomb, the road to Gracklstugh, and whatever else had learned to listen when the webs moved.
📝 Campaign Note — Out-of-Character Discussion
Before play resumed, Reuben explained that the campaign had developed into a heavily customised version of Out of the Abyss. The published adventure remained the foundation, but the current plan used only an estimated twenty to thirty percent of the original material alongside custom factions, locations, NPCs, gods, relics, and wider campaign arcs.
Reuben said he had outlined the core structure of approximately eighteen chapters and expected the campaign could potentially continue to around level eighteen, provided the characters survived long enough to see it.
The group also discussed the AI-generated character art, recap images, and campaign trailers being produced between sessions, including the challenge of maintaining visual and voice consistency and the considerable editing time required. This discussion was out of character and did not alter the events of the session.
